BIO

Szilvia Veszelka is a senior research fellow at the Biological Barriers Research Group of the Biological Research Centre, Szeged. Her main research interests are central nervous system diseases, the blood-brain barrier and ways to enhance brain drug delivery. Her research is currently focused on the design and testing of brain-targeted nanosized drug delivery systems. She has 58 scientific publications with a total impact factor of 194 and ⁓1,700 independent citations. As a principal investigator, she has led five research grants to date. In 2007, she was awarded the Dr. Ferenc Joó Foundation for Brain Research Award. She received the János Bolyai Research Fellowship twice, in 2012 and 2018. She is the supervisor of several undergraduate and PhD students at the University of Szeged. In 2019, she received the Dr. Lajos Ferenczy Memorial Award for mentoring MSc students and the Junior Mentor Award of the Szeged Academy of Sciences for mentoring the Student of the Year. She is an editorial board member of several international scientific journals (Pharmaceutics, International Journal of Molecular Sciences, Frontiers in CNS Drug Delivery), as well as a member of the Hungarian Neuroscience Society, European Neuroscience Society (FENS) and the Szeged Regional Committee of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Promoting science education is important to her, and she is a regular speaker at Researchers’ Night, Brain Awareness Week and Women in Science events. She graduated in 2020 with an integrative mental health degree, and regularly leads a mental health support group for research mothers at her workplace. She is married with two children.
