Bio

Gyula Nagy is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Human Geography, Institute of Geosciences, University of Szeged. His work is characterized by a critical approach to social and spatial processes, with research focusing on the spatial inequalities of climate change, environmental justice, and the interrelations between community participation and transformative social change at the local level. His key research interests include Hungarian spatial and urban development, as well as the analysis of community attitudes and behavioural patterns related to climate change. He is actively involved in both international and national research collaborations, including projects that apply community-based, non-conventional nature-based solutions and participatory action research methodologies. He obtained his PhD in 2020, and since 2025 he has been a lead researcher in the Horizon Biodiversa+ COmCHA project. As a university lecturer, he emphasizes the development of future-proof skills and is strongly committed to student mentoring. In 2025, he was honoured with the “Fekete Zoltán Young Mentor Award” of the Hungarian Young Academy, the “Young Lecturer of the Year 2025” award of the University of Szeged, and the “Golden Chalk Award” of the Faculty of Science and Informatics, which he had already received in 2015. To date, he has supervised more than 80 undergraduate theses and over 25 award-winning National Scientific Students’ Associations Conference (OTDK) theses. In recognition of his mentorship, he was awarded the Master Teacher Gold Medal in 2021, the Imreh Csanád Memorial Award in 2023, and the Pro Scientia Supervisor Certificate in 2025. He is a board member of the Hungarian Geographical Society, a supervisory board member of the Hungarian Urban Planning Society, and Vice President of both the Archenerg Cluster and the South Great Plain Urban Development Association. He is the author of more than 100 scientific publications indexed in the Hungarian Scientific Bibliography (MTMT), which have received over 300 citations.
