Gergely Török is a civil engineer who obtained his PhD in 2018 at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME). He currently works as a senior research fellow at the Department of Hydraulic and Water Resources Engineering and the HUN-REN–BME Water Management Research Group, where he is also engaged in teaching and mentoring activities.
He began his postdoctoral research at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with the support of the Dr. Imre Korányi Fellowship. His main research area is the modelling of large-scale spatio-temporal river morphological changes, with a particular focus on sediment transport, the impact of human interventions on flood levels, and the challenges of sustainable river regulation.
His scientific work has been recognized multiple times, including the Bolyai János Research Fellowship of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the OTKA Postdoctoral Excellence Programme, and several grants from the National Excellence Programme. In 2022, he received BME’s Award for the Most Significant Scientific Publication of the Year. Between 2023 and 2025, he worked as a researcher at the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) in New Zealand. He is married and the father of two children.
