The practice of scientific publishing has undergone significant changes in recent years, raising numerous new challenges and ethical questions for researchers. Reflecting on this changing landscape, the Hungarian Young Academy has produced a ten-part video series to provide a comprehensive overview of the current publishing system and the dilemmas it entails.
The series aims to help researchers—especially those at the beginning of their careers—navigate the increasingly complex world of scientific communication in a professionally grounded manner. The videos cover key topics such as the various models of open access publishing, practices for evaluating scientific performance, the operations of scientific publishers, and ethical and problematic publishing practices. The series also covers criteria for selecting journals, identifying predatory journals, as well as the current challenges and future directions of scholarly publishing.
The production of this ten-part series was coordinated by HYA alumnus Bálint Hartmann, former HYA Board Member, and Dávid Havasi, current HYA Board Member, in collaboration with the MTA’s communications team and additional HYA members who participated in the creation of the videos. Tamás Beke-Somfai, Gyöngyi Csongrádi, Dávid Havasi, Réka H. Lukács, Csaba Kerepesi, Zsófia Lázár, Ákos Lencsés, and Emőke Mohr took part in compiling and presenting the text for the videos.
The initiative is closely linked to the efforts of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences aimed at strengthening the quality and transparency of scientific publishing. Therefore, the video series produced by the Hungarian Young Academy is not only informative but also contributes to raising awareness within the scientific community and promoting responsible publishing practices.
The complete video series is now available (in Hungarian) on the Hungarian Young Academy’s YouTube channel.
