Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA)

The Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA for short) is a European initiative which seeks to promote the revisiting research assessment and define new directions for it with the involvement of the representatives of the academic ecosystem.

In summer 2023, the HUN-REN Secretariat initiated setting up a Hungarian working group to implement national-level advocacy. The working group gathers representatives from the Hungarian Higher Education Accreditation Committee (MAB), the Hungarian Rectors' Conference (MRK), the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA), the Hungarian Young Academy (FKA), and certain Hungarian universities.

The Hungarian Young Academy decided to join CoARA in July 2024.

European Federation of Academies of Sciences and Humanities – ALLEA

Founded in 1994, ALLEA, the Association of European Liberal Arts, Sciences and Humanities Academies, brings together nearly 60 European academies from across Europe. ALLEA represents the interests of its members in both international and European fora, promotes science as a global public good and fosters scientific cooperation across borders, disciplines and generations. Together with its members, it works to improve the conditions for research, to provide the best possible independent and interdisciplinary scientific advice and to strengthen the role of science in society. Its mission is to harness the intellectual excellence and expertise embodied in European academies for the benefit of the research community, policy-makers and society at large. ALLEA is constituted as a non-for-profit association and remains fully independent from political, religious, commercial or ideological interests.

The Hungarian Young Academy was admitted to ALLEA on 22 May 2024.

Young Academies Science Advice Structure (YASAS)

Founded in 2020, YASAS (Young Academies Science Advice Structure) is the first official platform to facilitate cooperation between young academies in Europe. YASAS brings together a number of young academies, including national academies of young researchers from Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Scotland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the Netherlands, as well as international organisations such as the Young Academy of Europe and the Global Young Academy, but membership is also open to other European young academies. The platform aims to deepen the dialogue between European young academies and to amplify the voice of young researchers in European science policy and scientific advice.

The Hungarian Young Academy has been a member of YASAS since 2020.

European Network of Young Academies (ENYA)

Strictly speaking, the European Network of Young Academies (ENYA) is not an independent organization as such but rather a loose network bringing together European young academies. The representatives of the latter come together once a year to discuss the problems affecting young researchers. All national young academies become members of the forum automatically, thus the Hungarian Young Academy has been taking part in the annual meetings since 2019.

Stockholm Charter for Academic Freedom

Academic institutions are increasingly confronted with economic and political challenges which require immediate and decisive action. Institutional and individual academic freedom are fundamental prerequisites to conduct free research and education based on scientific principles.

Having recognized the above, in May 2023, young academies from across Europe convened in Stockholm to develop a unified Charter for Academic Freedom. The Charter has also been signed by the Hungarian Young Academy to express its firm support for the preservation of the freedom of scientific research and education, and the dissemination of knowledge.

SAPEA

The acronym SAPEA stands for Science Advice for Policy by European Academies.

SAPEA’s role in the Scientific Advice Mechanism is to provide independent, high-quality reviews of the evidence to inform the policy recommendations made by the Group of Chief Scientific Advisors.

SAPEA is a consortium of academy networks, representing a large number of academies, young academies and scholarly societies from different countries. These networks include Academia Europaea, ALLEA, FEAM, Euro-CASE and YASAS, and any academy that is a member of these networks automatically becomes a SAPEA member as well.

As a YASAS member, the Hungarian Young Academy joined SAPEA in 2022.

Global Young Academy

The vision of the Global Young Academy (GYA) is science for all; science for the future, and its mission to give a voice to young scientists around the world.

The GYA develops, connects and mobilises young talent from six continents, and empowers young researchers to lead international, interdisciplinary and intergenerational dialogue. The GYA aims to elevate the voice of young scientists in evidence-informed and inclusive global, regional and national decision making.

The GYA has 200 members, comprised of passionate young scientists, typically 3-10 years after their PhD, between 30 to 40 years of age, and in the early stages of their independent academic careers. Members are selected for their scientific excellence and commitment to engage with society, and serve five-year terms. The GYA also has an engaged body of 407 alumni (as of 2023) spread around the globe. Members and alumni together represent over 100 countries.

The vibrancy of this global community is a result of the energy of its members, who are passionate about the role of science in creating a better world.
