Statement of Hungarian Young Academy regarding detachment of HUN-REN research centres for humanities and social sciences

The Hungarian Young Academy (HYA) hereby wishes to express its solidarity with the researchers affiliated with the research centres for the humanities and social sciences of the Hungarian Research Network regarding the planned detachment of four institutions. In the framework of the restructuring recently announced, the Research Centre for the Humanities, the  Hungarian Research Centre for Linguistics, the Centre for Social Sciences, and the Centre for Economics and Regional Studies would be cut off from the Hungarian Research Network (HUN-REN).

HYA underlines that institutional reorganization can only be acceptable and effective if such changes are implemented by the maintainer in consideration of the opinions of the affected employees of these institutions, and with the involvement of young researchers in the process while also ensuring open and preliminary communication and proceeding with due caution. However, the deconstruction of the integrity of the research network in the current manner will breed considerable uncertainty among researchers, thereby diminishing the stability and quality of scientific work carried out in these research centres while further exacerbating the precariousness of the situation of researchers, and especially of young scientists.

HYA calls decision-makers’ attention to the imminent risk that the planned restructuring would incite even more young researchers to give up their scientific careers, which would jeopardize the long-term replacement of scientific excellence in Hungary. HYA stresses the special importance of continuous, thoughtful and substantive discussions with the stakeholders concerned, as well as of providing transparent information about the underlying professional arguments, and it demands that decision-makers take into consideration the opinions of those affected by the restructuring.
