On behalf of HYA, former co-chair Boldizsár Szentgáli-Tóth attended the meeting of the Science Europe Working Group on Artificial Intelligence held in Budapest on 17–18 June 2026. The two-day meeting was hosted at the Palace of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and was chaired by Tobias Philipp, Chair of the Working Group.
The meeting focused on how the role of artificial intelligence in research is likely to evolve. The first day reviewed the AI practices of Science Europe’s Member Organisations (MOs) and emerging trends, followed by a foresight session examining applications of agentic AI in research that go beyond chatbots, drawing in part on the findings of the European Commission’s report “The futures of artificial intelligence”. Participants also discussed which foresight mechanisms Member Organisations currently use, and the extent to which artificial intelligence has so far been integrated into them.
The second day was built around a brainstorming session on Science Europe’s Strategy Plan and Multi-Annual Roadmap for 2027–2032, with breakout group work on priority areas for action. The agenda also covered the question of disclosing AI use in research outputs (AI disclosure) — drawing on insights from the 9th World Conference on Research Integrity in Vancouver — as well as EU-level developments, including the forthcoming opinion of the European Group on Ethics on artificial intelligence in science.
HYA is honoured to have the opportunity to channel the early-career researcher perspective into European-level thinking on AI policy through the Working Group’s meetings, and we look forward to continuing to take part in this work.
