News
We, the undersigned members of the Hungarian Young Academy, express our concern over the derogatory situation of public education and teaching faculty. The persistently low financial and social esteem of teachers and recent political developments that have raised a major public concern have prompted us to call attention to the urgency of finding a solution to the current problems.
Year after year, we see a steady decline in the number of students applying to teacher training majors. This is particularly true in the fields of science, mathematics and information technology. For years now, public education institutions have been facing serious difficulties in the education of these subjects because of the diminishing number of teachers. This may also contribute to the decrease in interest in scientific careers, which in the long term will jeopardize the supply of new generations of researchers in Hungary.
There is a burning need to find solutions to ensure quality education, retain teachers in the teaching profession, attract young people to scientific careers, and bolster the prestige of teachers in the eyes of society. We firmly believe that the long-term interests of the nation are best served by investing into quality education and thus, knowledge.
