Initiated by the Austrian Academy of Sciences, the open letter was signed by 32 European scientific organizations and academies, including four national young academies.
The letter was addressed to Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission; Piotr Serafin, Commissioner for Budget, Anti-Fraud, and Public Administration; Ekaterina Zaharieva, Commissioner for Startups, Research, and Innovation; and António Costa, President of the European Council.
The signatory organizations, including the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA) and the Hungarian Young Academy (HYA), express their concern over the declining competitiveness of European science. They emphasize the importance of a well-funded framework programme and the need to strengthen national research systems.
Considering the suspension of access to EU research funds and exchange programmes for Hungarian universities run by newly established public interest trusts, the HYA regarded signing the letter as particularly important. In our response letter, not only did we express our agreement and support for the authors of the open letter but we also emphasized the importance of a unified and inclusive European Research Area.
The open letter has been published on MTA’s website:
