On 22 May 2024, the European Federation of Academies of Sciences and Humanities (ALLEA) held its annual General Assembly in Berlin, organised by the Leopoldina Academy of Sciences, the German Academies of Sciences and Humanities and the German Young Academy. The event marked an important milestone not only in the history of ALLEA, which celebrated its 30th anniversary and elected new officers, but also in the life of the Hungarian Young Academy, as 70 representatives of more than 50 ALLEA academies present admitted HYA (along with the Belgian (Flemish) and Spanish Young Academies) among the members of ALLEA. With the new member academies, ALLEA now has 59 academies from within and outside the European Union. Notably, six young academies have joined its ranks, demonstrating the organisation’s commitment to support and promote inclusion, diversity and collaboration between different generations of researchers. Founded in 1994, ALLEA represents the interests of its members in both international and European fora, promotes science as a global public good and fosters scientific collaboration across borders, disciplines and generations. Together with its members, it works to improve research conditions, provide the best possible independent and interdisciplinary scientific advice and strengthen the role of science in society. Its mission is to harness the intellectual excellence and expertise embodied in Europe’s academies for the benefit of the research community, policy-makers and society at large. ALLEA is a non-profit organisation, entirely free of political, religious, commercial and ideological interests.
