7th Young Researchers’ Forum held in the framework of 196th MTA General Assembly

The 7th Young Researchers’ Forum, held on 10 May 2023 in the Ceremonial Hall of the MTA Palace, was a great success. As in previous years, we explored an important topic for young researchers through presentations and a roundtable discussion. This time the focus was on international mobility grants and scholarships.

The audience was greeted by Anna Erdei, MTA Secretary-General, and after her opening remarks, the Hungarian Young Academy was briefly introduced by HYA Co-Chair Gábor Kecskés.

The first presentation was given by Borbála Schenk, senior European grant advisor of the Higher Education and Industrial Cooperation Centre (FIEK) of Budapest University of Technology and Economics, who talked about consortium partner finding strategies. HYA member Balázs Lengyel, senior research fellow of the Research Centre for Economic and Regional Studies used the data of the 2021 survey of the Hungarian Young Academy to present the findings of the survey concerning the mobility of young researchers in Hungary. Next, a comprehensive overview of mobility grants was provided by HYA member Bálint Hartmann, senior research fellow of the Centre for Energy Research, after which Adrienn Szendrey, Deputy Head of Eötvös Loránd Research Network’s (ELKH) International Cabinet, described ELKH’s travel support schemes for Hungarian researchers, as well as its “homecoming” programmes for Hungarian scholars currently working abroad and recruitment programmes seeking to attract foreign academics to Hungary. Finally, HYA member Csaba Janáky, associate professor of the University of Szeged, cited his own career experience to illustrate the blessings of having international networking on scientific career paths.

The talks were followed by a roundtable discussion, with the participation of the speakers and Gergely Bőhm, Head of MTA President’s Office. The discussion, generating active involvement from the audience, was moderated by HYA Co-Chair Imola Wilhelm.
