He is the leader of the MTA CSFK Lend\u00fclet Pannon LitH<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oscope Research Group. His research interest focuses on the concentration and incorporation mechanisms of trace amount of \u2019water\u2019 into minerals. The \u2019water\u2019 even in trace amount plays a substantial role in the operation of global plate tectonics, for the examination of which the Carpathian-Pannonian Region serves as an excellent natural laboratory. The number of his articles in international journals with impact factor exceeds 50. These articles have received more than 1000 independent citations so far. Istv\u00e1n has been a member of the editorial boards of <em>American Mineralogist<\/em>, <em>Central European Geology<\/em> and<em> Acta Geodaetica et Geophysica<\/em>. He is an elected member of MTA&#8217;s Geochemical, Mineralogical and Petrological Committee, and he is the president of its Petrological Sub-Committee. He is the secretary for the Hungarian National Committee of the International Lithosphere Programme. His scientific achievements have been recognised by several international and domestic awards. He received the Outstanding Young Scientist Award from the Division of Geochemistry, Mineralogy, Petrology and Volcanology of the European Geosciences Union (2011). The European Mineralogical Union awarded him the Research Excellence Medal (2015). Among other national recognitions, he received the Junior Prima Award in the category of Hungarian Science (2011), the Bolyai Plaquette (2017) and the Vendl M\u00e1ria Medal (2018) from the Hungarian Geological Society (2018).
